Leaf, light and surface.
Each surface starts as an acrylic underpainting. Then comes the leaf, gold and silver, and it shifts as the light moves across it.
About the artist
Abstraction, driven by process.
Barbara Carruth earned her MFA at the University of California, Irvine, where she studied under Ed Moses and Light and Space artists Craig Kauffman, Robert Irwin and Larry Bell.
The “cool school” of Southern California shows in her work, yet her style takes the abstraction out of Abstract Expressionism. Each piece is purely process driven: it begins with found materials and grows through experimentation and happenstance.
“Possessing this knowledge, the viewer must confront their own imagination, acknowledging that they must either take responsibility for ascribing meaning to the work or accept the lack thereof.”
