Sherman Way is the spine. The swap meets are the heartbeat. Half Latino, half everything else, all working class. The 91303 raised us between Topanga and Winnetka, and we never had to flex. We just showed up.
Sherman Way is the main thoroughfare through Historic Old Town Canoga Park. It is also where the West Valley actually starts. La Fiesta Swap Meet Mall lives along this stretch, part of the LA tianguis tradition where Latino swap meets took over in the 1970s. You hear three languages in one parking lot. You eat better food than any restaurant on Ventura Boulevard.
The Día de los Muertos Family Festival on Main Street has run for over twenty five years. The community keeps it going. We did not need permission to build culture here. We just did it.
Canoga Park started as Owensmouth in 1912, named for the Owens Valley water that built the SFV. After LA annexed it in 1917, the rename came in 1931. Working class to its core, aerospace at Rocketdyne from 1955, factory jobs that kept the families fed. Bryan Cranston came up here. Meghan Markle too.
But the soul of Canoga Park is not in the famous names. It is in the families on the 91303 who turned a former aerospace town into a tianguis culture capital.
