The mission has been standing since 1797. Mission San Fernando Rey de España, the seventeenth of twenty one California missions, founded by Father Fermin Lasuen. Two and a half square miles of mission grounds, abuelita houses, and 91% Latino pride. The Lopez Adobe at 1100 Pico Street has been here since 1882, one of the two oldest private residences in the entire Valley.
When you wear San Fernando Original or San Fernando California, you carry that history. The hand drawn chicano script. The Victorian filigree. The orange and gold accents that show up at the swap meet, in the family photo, on the carne asada Sunday.
Every other Valley town gave up its independence to LA for water. San Fernando refused. We kept our own groundwater, our own city hall, our own mayor. Founded in 1874 by Charles Maclay on a 57,000 acre Ex Mission de San Fernando land grant for $115,000. Incorporated August 31, 1911.
